My Review

The Chalet School books were an obsession for me when I was 11. Long before the days of online shopping, I would scour dusty secondhand bookshop shelves for titles I didn't already have, and I still have my collection now - admittedly, it's not complete, as there are no less than 58 books in the series...yes, 58!! Admittedly, they are dated, but absolutely wonderful finds for a child who has grown beyond Malory Towers but isn't yet ready to move on from school stories. I wouldn't start with the first in the series, 'The School At The Chalet', as it tells the story of the founding of the school. And if you have a child who likes a bit more adventure in their reads then try 'The Princess At The Chalet School' first. Overall, the books are absolutely not high adrenaline, but are hugely comforting, and provide an immersive experience of idyllic boarding school life in the Swiss Mountains, with plenty of local culture and language thrown in, and the inevitable ups and downs of friendships and growing up. Feisty Jo, the main character in all the books, is a lovable heroine, brave, impetuous, and kind, and the books are gentle and comforting to read. As you can tell, I still haven't quite forgiven my parents for not sending me to the Chalet School.....

Heads Up!

Sadly, these are out of print but easy and inexpensive to buy secondhand online.

Publisher Review

The Chalet School now boasts over 30 pupils. The autumn term sees adventures of all kinds - a flood that threatens the school and the dramatic rescue of an unwanted St Bernard puppy. Finally Joey, Robin and Madge spend a delightful Christmas at Innsbruck.
