My Review
This is an Australian 'Little House On The Prairie' in picture book form. Stunning illustrations introduce children to the wildlife and landscape of the bush, and Lizzie's imagination will make both adults and children smile in recognition of the power of 'nonsense' to turn even the most boring task into an adventure. And there are many tasks for Lizzie and her mother to do while they await her father's return from his long journey to the nearest market. It's an immersive, eye opening story that helps readers experience the hard work and loneliness of life for incoming settlers in the Australia of the 1800s. Used in conjuction with other stories that explore the culture of Australia's First Peoples, the book adds an extra layer to understanding the history of the country and its people.
Heads Up!
Jan Ormerod, wonderful Australian illustrator of children's books, published many beautiful picture books - try 'Maudie and Bear' if you like this!
