My Review

This is an unusual and powerful picturebook version of the gospel story - one that begins with Jesus as an adult, when he returns from the wilderness and ends with the resurrection. Hendrix's retelling is original and his bold illustrations, mixed with his signature handlettered text, give the story a really fresh and different feel. In this book, Jesus is a wonder, a man of power and incredible miracles who touches lives wherever he goes - you don't get a sense of his character as strongly as his actions - but you can't have everything! To have a summary of the gospel in picturebook form that can be read aloud in ten minutes and will definitely start some interesting conversations is a gift!

Heads Up!

You might want to know that few liberties are taken with the words of Jesus - they are translated and adapted in places to fit the story better....Jesus 'roars' at the storm, for example, and says to Peter, when he tries to walk on the water, 'Have faith in my feet, not your own'.

Publisher Review

"On a day that didn’t seem at all unusual, there came an unusual Man. He looked like any other man, but he was like none who had ever lived before. This Man was God’s son. When he spoke, his words made things happen. His words came alive." The story of Jesus is one of the oldest and best-known in human history, and it has been interpreted by countless writers and artists over the last two thousand years. In this beautifully written and illustrated take on the Miracle Man, John Hendrix focuses on the biblical accounts of Jesus's many miracles leading up to his crucifixion. The book includes an author's note and list of Bible stories that inspired this project. Hendrix once again interweaves his handlettering with artwork to create a book readers of any denomination will find special and enlightening..
