My Review
Right from the beginning of this book, we know that Jack is in trouble. His behaviour is getting out of control as he caves in to peer pressure and starts on a road of petty crime in order to impress his new friends. I love the way Ele Fountain has the reader rooting for him right from the start, as we see his internal struggles and the unhappiness that drives him to try so hard to fit in despite his misgivings. Through the novel, we see Jack come to terms with who he really is and what is important to him as he is taken away from all the pressures of life at home and finds himself in the middle of the rainforest accompanying his mum as she gathers research in her battle against illegal deforestation. The book explores what it is to have the courage to stand up for what we know is right, both through Jack's personal growth, but also through the backdrop of the fight against corruption and the decimation of Amazonian habitat. Like all of Ele Fountain's books, its length and the reading ability required to enjoy it belie the subject matter and the depth of story - it's punchy, gripping, and super-relatable.
Heads Up!
I would say that this is pretty well pitched for 11-13 year olds. Ele Fountain is brilliant at writing pacy YA fiction that helps teens get a grip on global issues like climate change ('Melt'), homelessness ('Lost'), and the refugee crisis ('Boy 87').
